Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the firm
quickly gained recognition for its exemplary workmanship and taste.
Louis-François began his esteemed career at 28, taking over his master
watchmaker Adolphe Picard’s workshop at 29 rue Montorgueil, Paris. By 1853, he
moved the business to the fashionable Palais-Royal district at 5 Rue Neuve des
Petits Champs, becoming a favorite of Princess Mathilde, cousin of Napoleon
III, whose patronage opened the doors to Parisian society.
In 1874, Alfred Cartier succeeded his father, and in 1898,
the firm made its final move to 13 Rue de La Paix, the heart of Parisian
elegance and luxury. Alfred entrusted the Maison de Cartier to his three sons,
among whom Louis Cartier made a significant innovation by introducing the
combination of platinum and diamonds to create garland-style jewelry. This
technique, weaving platinum into extremely fine threads to enhance the sparkle
of diamonds, cemented platinum's status as an irreplaceable precious metal in
jewelry making.
